Meeting minutes

STANWOOD CAMANO ARTS GUILD MINUTES
For the January 25th meeting 2012
Board Members in attendance; Jerry Finn, Maryann Hinshaw, Dorothy Faydo, Sally Pray, Joyce Dunn, Kathy Raplee, Bev Reaume, and Larry Kantzer
     Thirty one members in total attended this meeting.
Social half-hour began at 6:30, and at 7:00 the Guild President called the meeting to order;
OLD NEWS
Because there were only eight members at the last meeting, the minutes of this meeting were sparse and uneventful so the President did not seek to have them approved.
There was no other old news
NEW BUSINESS
Two new members were invited to jury into the Guild;
David Thomas of Camano Island shared examples of his woodwork, which in this case were wooden ducks.
Roxanne Sappingfield showed the Guild her glass work and apparently she works in many different mediums.
Both applicants were approved for membership to the Guild.
 The Guild President then invited Chairperson Dorothy Faydo to discuss the upcoming Art Aloft show. Dorothy explained to the membership that the show was opened this year to commercial sales as well as judged items, and that this year Quest clues would be hidden in the show to increase attendance. The move to commercialize the show was made in an effort to boost the attendance and profitability to the artists, but there was discussion about the timing of the show. Bill Paulson suggested that the timing of the show was a problem, and suggested we move the time for next year’s show.
Identification cards being handed out by Dorothy were found to be too small, and new cards will be emailed out and available at the show.
Discussion of set-up, seeking of volunteers, and discussion of the show concluded.
Bev Reaume invited members to sign up for Art at the Schoolhouse. She pointed out that smaller items sell better at this show that runs from the 6th of April until the 29th, and that there is outside space available. Only 10 members have signed up for the show so far.
A questionnaire was passed out at the meeting to inquire about some of the ideas the new Guild President has proposed. Discussion was held on the following topics;
At present Guild scholarships are given to art majors only. It was proposed that next year the Guild open this competition to any and all young people who are engaged in making art, and that the Guild put on a show to determine winners of prizes for displayed art and portfolios. This is an attempt to bring more prospective members, as they age and develop, to the Guild. It was agreed that discussion on this idea would continue.
The Guild President noted that the questionnaire members had filled out plainly showed interest in a Guild Gallery. Cost, levels of involvement, possible venues, all of these things were discussed openly by Guild members, and it was decided we should continue to pursue the idea. The Guild President offered his hope that the Guild would have a gallery by at least the last three months of this year.
The Guild President then suggested that signs for our shows needed to be upgraded to look more artistic. He expressed the hope that our signs would be addressed by the Art by the Bay show.
Indy Behrendt has taken over membership of Gallery by the Bay, and was invited to talk to the membership about some of her hopes and plans for the Gallery.
The Guild President announced his hopes to obtain a booth for this year’s Twin City Idlers car show in the name of the Guild, and invited any members who were interested to share the booth. More will be said about this in the future.
Melanie Seorrels pointed out that Four Springs show has 18 of 24 participants that are Guild members, and that there have been possible misunderstandings about SCAG member’s involvement in CAA shows. It was determined that SCAG and CAA both need to work together better on shows that involve our members.
The meeting continued with much good discussion of the issues presented here, and then came to a close at 8:00.
These minutes wearily submitted by
Larry Kantzer, Guild President

Art Aloft:  Artists may bring up to 5 items to be judged.  Judging starts at 6pm.  Come by 1pm id you are able to help.  Currently we have 27 artists for Art Aloft.

Glass Quest:  Brings approx.. 25K folks.  If the “clue ball” is found, take a pic with it and turn in the ball.

Last minutes approved and seconded. (Approved by Rodney Patzer, and seconded by Joyce Dunn)

SCAG 501C4.  Will be called “Social Welfare Org”

“Art at the schoolhouse”   This is the 5th year. Venue is for 1 month so artists can sell their work.  There will be more signs this year.  (Bev Reaume)   4/26/12-4/29/12.  Outside 2x6 grids are $15, indoor $25-$35.  Artists will need to work.  Space varies.  Deadline to enter show is 3/10/12.

Mary Anne Hinshaw requests artist submit their work for the ABB posters.  Next meeting will be poster contest.

Stanwood area foundations will help us do murals. 7’x35’ (approx.)  We discussed getting high school students  involved in painting murals and doing grids.  Submissions due by 4/15/12.  Possibly the mural will reflect Stanwood history.  The city would like a mural on the library, maybe next year?

SCAG is looking for artists who would like their work in our own gallery.  We have a space that will only cost us $500 per month, plus electric etc.  We need at least 17 artists at $25 per month to make this feasible.  We would prefer at least 20 artists. (we have 14 now).
We may need to go outside of SCAG to get folks involved.  We can invite CAA members.  We will also need volunteers to run the gallery.  Will discuss semantics with artists who want to participate in pursuing the gallery.  Ann Curtis made motion to form a committee for feasibility.  Diane Yakowitz seconded.  Majority in favor.

Discussion followed, and the meeting ended around 8:00.

GENERAL MEETING

The Guild President called the meeting to order and invited prospective new members to come forward and be juried into the Guild. Bill Harrison and Claire Myers were accepted into the Guild, as were the works of Sharon Dodge's son and daughter-in-law, who will be joining the Guild in the Future.

Five members submitted posters for the Art by the Bay Poster Contest, members voted on their favorite poster, and Bev Paulson's poster was chosen to represent the Guild in this year's show.

The Guild President then called for any ideas on our proposed mural for the Farmer's Market. There were many ideas, but only one submission, which was passed around the room for all to see. The President told members that he would schedule a meeting of the Mural Makers after set-up for Art at the Schoolhouse.

Bev Reaume, chairperson of Art at the Schoolhouse, briefly discussed the up-coming Art at the Schoolhouse show, and requested help with the set-up.

The Guild President then requested volunteers to help with publicity for our shows and our planned new gallery. Sharon Dodge graciously volunteered to help with publicity.  The Guild President reminded the membership that the Guild was still looking for a place for our gallery.

The Guild Scholarship Committee will be meeting at  Gail Merrick's class room at 2:30 on April 11th to judge the work of High School seniors who will be competing for the scholarships the Guild presents each year.

The meeting ended with further discussions of murals and galleries trailing off into the night.
