Featured Artist Profiles

Art by the Bay Featured Artist for 2007:
John Muhler

By vote of the Stanwood-Camano Arts Guild membership, John Muhler’s acrylic painting “Quiet Destination” won this year’s poster contest for Art by the Bay, Camano Island’s Arts Festival.

A professional artist for over 30 years, John Muhler strives to capture light and form in all its subtleties and strengths while enjoying a unique relationship with his canvases. Balancing brilliance with contrast, defining edges and contours with the ever-elusive background, Muhler creates a diverse body of work with styles ranging from photo-realism to impressionism, surreal abstract forms, and combinations in between. His studio is filled with on-going portrait and landscape commissions.

“I enjoy the interaction and sharing of the creative process to compose an original painting that meets the needs of the collector.” – John Muhler

His portrait project, Life Encounters on Canvas, explores the diversity and intimate thoughts of students who have emigrated from countries around the world. The 28 portraits and their accompanying life stories have been displayed at community centers, libraries, public schools, colleges and universities. John is active in the Camano Arts Association, and is a former president of the Stanwood Camano Arts Guild.

Stanwood-Camano Arts Guild
2007 Scholarship Recipient
:
KC Cleek

The Stanwood-Camano Arts Guild, in furthering the appreciation of the arts, awards a yearly scholarship to an outstanding art student attending Stanwood High School. At its last monthly meeting, the Guild was proud to present the winner of its 2007 scholarship, KC Cleek. KC’c been busy building her portfolio throughout her High School years, and has already received multiple awards and honors.

One of KC’s biggest supporters is Gail Merrick, Stanwood High's inspirational art teacher with a track record of helping budding young artists find their muse. Each of the four years KC was in her class, Gail encouraged KC to enter her work in the Scholastic awards competition, and KC won gold every time (interestingly, each time she won with a different style of self-portrait).

KC thanked the Guild for their recognition: “I would like to express my sincere thanks for being chosen as the recipient of the Stanwood Camano Arts Guild’s generous scholarship. It will help me pursue my education so I can eventually make my passion for art a career.”

KC will have some of her best work on display at the 2007 edition of Art by the Bay, Camano Island's Arts Festival.
