While growing up on a small farm among the cow pastures and tulip fields of Northwest Washington's Skagit Valley, it didn't take long for Amber to discover that making music was a perfect way to pass the time. By the age of 15, she had learned to play the violin, bass, piano, trumpet, and percussion, before finally finding her voice and the acoustic guitar. Amber found her way up to Bellingham, WA in 1998 which presented many opportunities to collaborate with and be inspired by other local musicians. Since then, Amber has tapped into the Bellingham music scene as a solo singer/songwriter, becoming a favorite at many local music venues. Her voice has been described as "powerful" and "angelic" with the ability to turn heads on a busy Saturday at the Bellingham Farmer's Market or to hush a boisterous crowd at the local bar. From humorous songs like "Short Jeans" (an anthem about being vertically challenged) to songs about love, courage and social injustice, Amber Darland consistently relates to her listeners with the sincerity and thoughtfulness that is often absent in today's music scene. | |||
| A “fiddle tunes big band,” the South End String Band have created quite a name for themselves in the Stanwood-Camano area. Comprising eleven local musicians on fiddle, guitars, banjos, dulcimers, autoharp, percussion, washboard, easel, sandpaper, etc., the South End Band plays music everybody knows, and peppers each performance with a generous helping of down-home wit and wisdom, served up by their anonymous “spiritual advisor,” Skeeter Daddle. The hardest working band on Camano Island will have a second CD out soon, entitled “Victims of Unbridled Ambition” recorded on Camano Island. Their first CD, "Legends in their own Minds" went "rusty tin," (not quite multi-platinum) according to Skeeter. Come listen and buy their CDs. Putting Pocket Monkey into a specific genre is all but impossible. They are a 6-piece band playing intricate original polyrhythmic instrumental jazz compositions with diverse influences, including eastern European melodies, traditional jazz, classic TV theme songs, and hip-hop sampling. You'll hear orchestral complexities reminiscent of Frank Zappa's big bands, and at times they evoke a Jethro Tull-like rock sweetness. All of the band members play numerous gigs with other bands and orchestras while making time to rehearse and record regularly with Pocket Monkey. Live performances are rare and always memorable. This amazing and eclectic band of top-notch musicians rehearses for a year between one or two stunning annual performances, and this time Art by the Bay gets one of them. Don't miss this one! Performing together for more nearly two decades, the Stilly River Band delivers an exciting range of music, from bluegrass to progressive folk, Latin, Irish, rock and rhythm 'n blues. Their bluegrass arrangement of Sam & Dave's soul classic, Hold On, I'm Comin' will put a smile on your face for the rest of the day. Known by some as “the bad boys of bluegrass”, the Stillys play and eclectic mix of music from traditional bluegrass to other less conventional styles played in a bluegrass format that the band labels “rude grass.” The band features John Amber-Oliver on lead vocals and guitar, Jonathon Schneider on tenor harmonies and banjo, Stuart Torgeson on dobro and accordion, John Daugherty on vocals and stand up bass, Steve Stolpe on vocals and mandolin and Mike Schway on fiddle. The Stilly River Band delivers accomplished musicianship, excellent vocal harmony and an always entertaining and unpredictable show. | |||

Take a detour with this metamorphic band of Camano Island musicians
playing their take on slightly psychedelic bluesy folk-tinged rock and
roll.
You'll hear lots of familiar tunes
and a few originals from this latest and best incarnation of
a band that has, in one form or another, played at virtually every "music
enabled" Art by the Bay. The band currently consists of Cathy Tibert
on vocals, acoustic guitar, flute and harmonica; Mark Bamber and Jeff
Lemaiche on lead guitar and vocals; Paul Tibert
on bass guitar; Scott Tracewell on drums; and Cathy's 13-year old
singer/songwriter daughter, Selena. Selena is a
prolific songwriter who is already gaining recognition for her talents.
(click here to read a newspaper article about
her) They’ll surely have
your spirits up singing and dancing along with their infectious jams and
grooves. |

One Ton of Ducks performs crafty original "coffeehouse rock and roots" songs with scorching guitars and a hint of jazz, soaring harmonies, infectious grooves, and sometimes a ukulele. Including veterans of both the road and the recording studio, the band is dynamic but not obtuse, melodic but not cloying, topical but not didactic, sentimental but not morose. All band members are songwriters as well. Mark Dodge sings and plays guitar, keys, ukulele, and bass; Roger Ludwick sings and plays acoustic guitar and keys; Wende Hilyard sings and plays percussion and keys; Patrick Donicht plays bass, percussion, and keys; and Thomas Kemper just plays the crap out of the drums. See www.bigquack.com for information. |
Thanks to Mark Dodge of Big Quack Records for organizing the Art by the Bay concert series. Special thanks to Patrick Donicht of The Audio Vortex for providing real-time support and expertise.
